Fleet management at K&V Kft.
Fleet management and control play an ever increasing role in forwarding because considerable savings can be achieved by accurate transport organization. The i-Fleet system implemented by i-Cell Kft. for K&V Kft. serves as a good example.
Mr József Varga, Managing Director of K&V Szállítmányozási Kft, tells us that their fleet composed of 70 pcs of 1.5 – 24 t trucks transports goods throughout Europe therefore real time connection with their vehicles is very important to them.
Since the trucks are on the move continuously and they deliver goods to very tight deadlines, real time connection makes permanent control and plannability feasible and enables them to respond to unexpected events in a short time.
The cost-efficient system implemented by the company means not only to plan a specific route to be followed by the driver normally but even the place and time of refuelling is determined exactly. This can be explained by the fact that in case of several dozens of vehicles deviation from the ideal route and refuelling at a more expensive filling station may lead to significant plus costs. Accordingly, the trucks of the company may only leave the preset route for justified traffic reasons and refuelling is allowed in a specified country and town at a given company’s filling stations.
To monitor the observance of the rules mentioned above, at the beginning of last year the company requested several suppliers to make offer for satellite tracking systems and provide a test device. They were looking for a solution which provided as much services as possible for them and its price was also appropriate for them. Based on the experience gained during the trial period they accepted the offer made by i-Cell which proved to be most advantageous considering both the services provided and price.
An important decision making consideration was that i-Cell undertook to supply not only the device and system necessary for operation but perfectly adjusted the service to K&V’s requirements. For example, i-Cell Kft. is monitoring the operation and state of K&V’s fleet and informs K&V’s dispatcher about any deviating operation via e-mail without delay.
The contract was concluded in the first quarter of 2007, and during the partial fleet replacement, which became due in the spring, the devices were installed in the new vehicles immediately then the other vehicles working continuously were also equipped with that device. Mentioning the experience gained during the operation of the system Mr József Varga stated that the satellite system helped the work of the dispatcher considerably because it was able to display very small details too. In addition to registering the exact place of the vehicle and the time of refuelling, the system is able to calculate the number of hours during which a given driver may drive on a specific day or week and the dispatcher can adjust the next transports of the vehicle to this period of time.
The Managing Director emphasised that according to the new regulation the documents prepared by the tachograph shall remain in the truck for 28 days after the current period and the new system provides great help for prompt analysis, planning and control. Using continuously registered data they can immediately see the way how the driver plans his own time and they even know when a given trailer was coupled or uncoupled.
The system also registers when the door leading to the freight is opened or the driver is driving too fast or the engine gets overheated. To give an example he mentioned a story when one of their truck drivers had lost his way near Munich not long ago. The dispatcher detected it in a short time and informed the driver. It turned out that the driver had taken a wrong exit at a junction and had lost his way. On the basis of the instructions given by his dispatcher he left the motorway at the next exit and found the right way. With this prompt action a significant quantity of fuel and time were saved thanks to the satellite tracking system.
The company established by Hungarian owners in 1998 installed satellite tracking system in 5 500 vehicles of more than 250 enterprises over the past ten years. Besides, they have solved town operation tasks for a number of companies and municipal enterprises. K&V Kft. is a good example of dynamic users because in 2006 when they got in contact with each other the company was a small enterprise but it grew into a medium size company in the meantime. The functions required by them cover a significant part, but not all, of the services provided by i-Cell.
Out of the options offered by the ever-increasing system they use much more than the simple satellite tracking system but, for the time being, less than the entire range of various services integrated into the company management system. Mr Károly Farkas underlined that they customized their system to the client, i.e. K&V. just like in case of other companies.
According to their basic philosophy they do not sell finished products or software in a box but an existing basic package to be adjusted according to client’s demands in accordance with the given application. They are convinced that lasting business relationships can only be established with high quality and customized services. With the basic package offered by them the client can maintain online connection with the vehicles and see their positions, the fuel volume consumed and the speed of the vehicle and even the tachograph disk can be created from the data provided by the system. The on board unit installed in the vehicle collects data which are transferred as standardised data through the GPRS network to the server where the authorized users access to them. If somebody requests more detailed data or analyses, i-Fleet is able to analyse drivers’ driving styles and makes proposal on more efficient fleet operation by drawing reliable conclusions from detailed examination of technical data related to operation. When making use of this service several dozen data collected by the on board unit need not be analysed manually because the software itself does it according to the requirements.
Though no special software is required but intelligent and attentive colleagues are needed. Such colleagues are needed who are aware of the interests of their own company and the operation of i-Fleet and the opportunities offered by it. They are those people who can tell which additional data and analyses can also be useful to the client. i-Cell Kft. is a partner in implementing them – says Mr Károly Farkas to draw attention to cooperation.
